Five skills that take a student from reading a price tag to walking out of a shop with the right change. Every one is practised in a classroom shop first — a first attempt should not happen with a queue behind him.

How to run this unit
Set up a shop corner and practise there until it is boring, then go somewhere real.
Use real prices from a local flyer so the numbers look familiar.
One skill at a time — reading a price before paying, paying before change.
Let him hand over the money himself. Doing it for him teaches nothing.
Praise the step he got right even when the total came out wrong.
